Lath and Plaster

Wattle and Daub

Wattle and Daub is a traditional technique used predominantly for period properties in Berkshire and surrounding areas. Daub is a composite building material usually used for coating a surface or, when mixed with straw and applied to wattles or laths, to form a wall – hence the term Wattle and Daub.

The Stone Art team has been especially trained to produce daub in-house, which ensures the quality of the daub is the best possible and also cuts out the additional cost of acquiring it from a third party – a saving that is passed on to clients.

The technique of Wattle and Daub is one undertaken extensively by the Stone Art team, which has genuine passion for traditional techniques like this. To find out more or receive a quote, feel welcome to get in touch.

Lath and Plaster

Lath and Plaster is a traditional method we often use to construct or repair ceiling damage. This is considered heritage work. This traditional method of lath and plaster is ideal when preserving or restoring early properties and keeping its originality. We use all the traditional materials such as chestnut oak laths which are very robust and horse hair which acts as a binding agent for the materials.

The benefit of using lath and plaster is it has a far more superior soundproofing quality than plasterboard, enables the ceiling to breathe and become flexible which will in turn reduce cracking over time.

The use of decorative cornice and mouldings is evident in many houses and heritage properties may become necessary for various reasons. A ceiling may collapse following water damage or insect infestation in the lathes or joists above or cornices may need to be replicated following alterations or conversions.

These decorative features can be repaired or replaced either by making a new running mould and running on a bench or by running the mouldings or cornice in situ.

These principles can apply to either interior or exterior mouldings or cornice
